Meet Your Guide

I am John, an Irish man who had a ‘coup de coeur’ for La Rochelle and decided to set up Discover La Rochelle!

The idea to set up Discover La Rochelle came in 2019 not long after I had arrived in La Rochelle, after spending 18 months on a trip travelling around South America. During this trip I had been on lots of different tours but particularly enjoyed the city walking tour experiences. So naturally when I came to La Rochelle I wanted to join one here to understand the place better. But to my surprise, there were no tours in English, despite there being quite a few foreign visitors here.

As time went by, and having fallen in love with the local culture and people, I quickly realised that this was a fascinating city with a unique way of life and it was a shame that non-French speaking visitors to the city couldn’t get to experience it in a better way. And that’s when the idea came!

As a naturally outgoing person, with Irish storytelling culture in my genes, I was convinced I could create an entertaining tour that would explain how this city came to be, and show the best of what this city has to offer. So I set it up and put it to the test: to see if people would like it and also if I would enjoy doing it…and thankfully the answer to both was yes!

And so, Discover La Rochelle was born! Since then, I am extremely proud to have shown my adopted city to thousands of visitors and grateful that they often leave 5-star reviews on Tripadvisor(opens in a new tab), Google(opens in a new tab) and others(opens in a new tab). This has motivated me to offer bespoke private tours and other types of tours that I am looking forward to creating more of in the future!

John's La Rochelle Favourites

Favourite place in La Rochelle: The benches at the Michael Crepeau monument - enjoying the sunset over the horizon on a sunny evening while watching the boat traffic glide in and out of the Old Port is just magic!
Favourite thing to do in La Rochelle: Take the bike along the coast of La Rochelle and stop off at the oyster farms to try some fresh oysters.
Favourite thing to eat in La Rochelle: It would have to be Moules Frites, but only with the local Bouchot mussels during the season from May to September!
